Some birds have it all

For the past month, we've had at least two pair of Painted Buntings visiting our feeders again. They've been regular summer-time residents here for the past couple of years. (Some of these shots are not as clear as I'd like, but I'm throwing them in anyway...)

The males are extremely vivid in their coloration.

The female is lovely, too, in her lemon-lime dress.

On top of that, their song is a lovely little trill. They're like the best looking couple in high school (you know the ones - the prom king and queen that are the QB and head cheerleader, who also ace their classes and are all set to breeze through life.)

Well, this year I spotted one that was a bit different. I tried to Google if this was a normal occurrence - like perhaps he was just coming into his full breeding plumage - but I didn't find any similar images out there. I've never seen one with yellow on his belly - almost gives a harlequin effect.

Even as a 'misfit', he's beautiful!
Shoot, even his backside is pretty.
Like a box of highlighters exploded.

Nawet pani w cytrynowej szacie jest piękna. Kolory piór panów są wspaniałe, a jedne nawet sobie dodał żółty kolor. Pozdrawiam.
Even the lady in lemon coat is beautiful. The colors are great masters of feathers, and some even added a yellow color. Yours.

WOW! They certainly are colourful! What a treat to have them at your feeders!

I would be over the moon if one of those appeared at our feeders! I loved your comment about the box of highlighters...very appropriate! What a great series of shots!

Oh I love these, had never heard of, or seen them before. That misfit is stunning! I love when nature shakes things up a bit and this may even be a hybrid of sorts,,,always a possibility, after seeing my raptor hybrid...hmmm

I am still hoping for the day I see these beauties in real life!!! Oh, they are sooooo beautiful!! Amazing creatures. thank you for letting me see them at your place! blessings ~ tanna

At next fill for that tube feeder, I would use black oil sunflower seed. That seed in there now is mostly wasted and ends up on the ground. You will get a much bigger variety of birds if you use sunflower seed.

Hi there - nice set of photographs.

The first time I saw pictures of these birds I thought they had to be made up! I would really like to see one in the flesh (feather?)

I like your analogy about the exploding box of highlighters. How I'd love to see one of these guys in person (or on one of your sketch pads). They look like the colorful birds found in the tropics. In that one photo, "Yellow-breast" is giving you that "What are you lookin' at?" look. :)
